Glue Types, Honestly Compared
This is where most projects are won or lost.
Gem-Tac is a water-based adhesive made specifically for gems and rhinestones. It dries clear, it stays flexible, and it cleans up with plain water while wet. The manufacturer states a one-hour dry time and a 24-hour full cure, and notes it works best with flatback crystals rather than hotfix ones, because hotfix stones carry a heat-activated coating that fights liquid glue. It's the friendliest option for fabric and the one I reach for on hand-washed cotton pieces. Low odor, non-toxic, forgiving if you smear it. E6000 is an industrial-strength solvent adhesive. It's the strongest of the three on hard, awkward or high-stress surfaces: shoes, leather, metal, plastic. Eclectic Products lists a 24-hour cure with maximum bond strength taking up to 72 hours, plus washer/dryer safe and waterproof once cured. Trade-off: strong fumes, so open a window, and it strings like melted cheese if you rush.
B7000 is E6000's cousin, popular for phone cases, tumblers and nail work. Slightly thinner, slightly more precise out of the tube, similar solvent smell, similar 24 to 48 hour cure. Great for hard surfaces, overkill for a t-shirt.
Hotfix rhinestones skip glue entirely. They come pre-coated with heat-activated adhesive on the back. You press an applicator wand tip on each stone for 10 to 35 seconds depending on stone size, the glue melts, it's done. No drying, no cure, no fumes. The catch: hotfix needs a fabric that tolerates heat, so cotton and denim yes, delicate synthetics and anything with a plastic coating no. How Do You Bedazzle Something? The 7-Step Method
Same seven steps for every project I've ever done. A tumbler and a t-shirt differ in glue and drying position, not in process.
Step 1: Plan the Design Before You Open the Glue
Sketch it on paper first, at actual size. Trace the item's outline if you can, then draw inside it.
Two rules save beginners from regret. First, odd numbers and asymmetry read better than perfectly balanced rows. A scatter that fades from dense to sparse looks designed. A uniform grid looks like a mistake. Second, outline before you fill. Step 2: Clean and Prep the Surface
Glue bonds to the surface, not to the sizing, fabric softener, oil or factory coating sitting on top of it.
New clothing: wash it once with no fabric softener, dry it fully, skip the dryer sheet. Sizing on new cotton is a bond killer.
Shoes and bags: wipe with rubbing alcohol on a cloth and let it flash off for 5 minutes. On smooth leather or coated plastic, scuff lightly with 220-grit sandpaper first so the glue has texture to grab.

For lettering, print the word at the right size, tape it to the outside, and prick the outline through with a pin every 5 mm. Pull the paper away and connect the dots lightly. For symmetrical shapes, fold the item in half and mark the center line first, then work outward from it in both directions.
For full coverage you don't need a full map. Mark the boundary of the covered zone and a couple of guide lines through the middle so your rows don't slowly drift diagonal, which they will otherwise.
Step 4: Apply Glue in Dots, Not Puddles

The dot should be slightly smaller than the stone, about two-thirds of its diameter. When you press the stone down, the glue spreads out to exactly the edge and stops. Too much and it squeezes up the sides and clouds the facets. Too little and only the center bonds, and the stone pops off the first time something catches it.

Step 5: Place Stones with a Wax Pencil

Touch the wax tip to the top of a stone, lift, position over the dot, press down gently, and lift the pencil straight up. The glue grips harder than the wax and the stone stays behind.
Press each stone with the flat of the tool or a fingertip for 2 to 3 seconds. That contact is what pushes the glue into the fibers. Skipping it is one of the main reasons stones fall off later.
Work in one direction, usually top-left to bottom-right if you're right-handed, so your hand never rests on wet stones. Set your outline stones first, then fill inward. If a stone lands crooked, fix it in the next 30 seconds while the glue is still open. After that, leave it. Prying a half-set stone tears up the fabric nap and you'll see the scar.

Step 6: Let It Dry Flat, and Wait Longer Than You Want To
Lay the piece flat and untouched. On a curved item like a tumbler or a shoe, prop it so the glued area faces up and gravity works with you, not sideways.
Timing by glue:
- Gem-Tac: touch-dry in about 1 hour, full cure at 24 hours.
- E6000: cure at 24 hours, maximum bond strength up to 72 hours.
- Fabri-Fuse: dry flat 8 hours, machine-washable after 72.
- B7000: 24 to 48 hours.
- Hotfix: cool for 30 seconds and it's done, no cure needed.
Touch-dry is not cured. A stone that feels solid after a couple of hours will still shear off under stress later that same day. If the project has a deadline, count backwards 72 hours and start then. Nothing else in bedazzling punishes impatience this hard.
Room temperature and airflow help. Humidity slows water-based glue noticeably, so in a damp room add a few hours.
Step 7: Inspect, Clean, and Seal
Once cured, run your thumb firmly across the whole design. Any stone that shifts, pull it off and redo it now. Better one loose stone today than a bald patch in a photo next month.
Clean stray glue haze off facets with a cotton swab. Water for Gem-Tac, a little rubbing alcohol for E6000 or B7000, applied to the swab and not poured on.
Sealing is optional and situational. On tumblers and shoes, a thin coat of clear water-based sealant over the glue lines, kept off the stone faces, adds real durability against water and abrasion. On clothing, skip it. Sealant stiffens fabric and it doesn't survive washing anyway.

The high-stakes one, because it's a single event with a fixed date and a lot of cameras.
Grad caps are usually polyester with a stiff cardboard backing, which is a friendlier surface than it sounds. Glue holds well and the flat 9.5 x 9.5 inch top is a perfect canvas. Bedazzling Shoes
Shoes are the durability test. They flex, they scuff, they get wet, and they take impact from every curb you clip.
Use E6000 or B7000, never water-based glue. Prep matters more here than anywhere else: alcohol wipe, then scuff smooth leather or coated synthetics with 220-grit so the glue has bite. Stay off the flex crease across the toe box if you can, or accept that those stones will need touch-ups.

Denim is thick, sturdy and heat-tolerant, which makes it the most forgiving fabric on this list. It's also the only one where hotfix stones are genuinely easier than glue for large designs.
Classic placements: pocket outlines at 200 to 300 stones each, a side seam stripe at roughly 40 stones per 10 inches, or a scatter down one thigh. Prewash to remove sizing, and always put cardboard between the front and back layers of a leg. A curved, non-porous, frequently-handled, frequently-washed surface. Hardest of the five.

8 Bedazzling Mistakes That Ruin Projects
- Using too much glue. It squeezes up the sides, dries cloudy, and permanently dulls the stone. Dots at two-thirds of stone diameter, always.
- Not washing new fabric first. Sizing and factory finishes sit on top of the fibers. Your glue bonds to the coating, the coating lets go, the stones go with it.
- Wearing or washing it before full cure. Touch-dry at hour 1 is not cured at hour 24. Rushing this causes more stone loss than every other mistake combined.

Wait 72 hours after the last stone before the first wash, regardless of what the bottle says about 24. The extra time costs nothing and buys real strength.
Turn the garment inside out. This is the single most effective thing you can do. Stones then rub against the drum through fabric instead of directly.
Cold water, gentle or delicate cycle, mesh laundry bag. Hot water softens most adhesives and agitation does the rest.
No fabric softener, no bleach. Softener leaves a film that creeps under stone edges. Bleach attacks resin stones and clouds them.
